Congratulations to the Guilderland Hedge Fund - a small group of students from our Investing in Your Future Club who this past year uncovered the Knowledge@Wharton Investment Competition and joined it. The Guilderland Hedge Fund was comprised of Arnav Kannan, Aditya Kattuboina, Theodore Karavolas, Edward Yu and Sayeed Kahn. The team did a great job and were finalists in the Wharton competition. During April break while most of us were enjoying the rain here in Albany, the group presented their investment approach at Wharton.
Over the course of the competition the students learned about stocks, industry sectors, reading earnings reports, pre-market and after-hours market data, researching trends in stock price performance and trading volume and team work.
The team's strategy evolved throughout the competition. Initially they struggled with developing a real game plan. Until, they had one break through moment when they noticed that large stocks typically had huge increases following a good earnings report. This lead them to look at pre-market and after-hours market trading activity. Then, they began experimenting with different stocks to see if their theory held true. They found that, in general, it did hold true. So they sought to optimize on this learning and their trading "strategy" blossomed from there.
Throughout the competition, team members would routinely consult with each other and compare and contrast various stock investment recommendations. Team members would discuss their ideas and then vote on stocks to add to or sell from their portfolio. In addition, team members agreed to divide the work associated with the stock market competition project: analyzing stocks and investment information, as well as developing a mid-term strategy paper and a final strategy paper and a presentation.
As it relates to the outcomes of the competition, the big winners are the students for all they learned from participating in the competition. They enhanced their knowledge about investing, business in general, thinking "outside the box" and working collaboratively within a team.
I look forward to the Investing in Your Future team members competing in the Knowledge@Wharton Investing Competition, the Ithaca College Investing Competition and/or other investment competitions in the future.
Congratulations again Arnav, Adi, Theo, Ed and Sayeed.
